This week’s Lens-Artists Challenge has the theme of ‘People: Here, There And Everywhere’.
That’s certainly a challenge for me, because as a general rule I tend to avoid photographing people, apart from snaps for the family album. I just don’t feel comfortable about the implicit invasion of privacy, quite apart from the risk of being pursued by an irate ‘subject wielding a baseball bat.
Sometimes, though, my interest will be piqued by somebody rather than something. I captured this image in one of Dubai’s smaller shopping malls while passing a barber’s shop. It was one of those times where I could imagine something a little less mundane than simply a random bloke getting his hair cut. What was the hairdresser thinking at that precise moment?

Right up until the most recent post in the Fun Foto Challenge, this week’s theme has been ‘candid’, but now it’s ‘catching people unawares’. It’s too late for me to change now, so you’re getting the post I’d already prepared.
At a recent Sunday market in the town of Chabanais there was, for no obvious reason, a small pen containing a few miserable-looking donkeys. The baleful stare that this one gave me suggests that he wasn’t happy to be photographed – or to be there in the first place.

For this week’s B&W challenge, Cee wanted a candid photograph of a person or a pet. We are a pet-free zone here, but this gentleman was snapped at the La Sagne Hippodrome last July 14th.
I don’t really ‘get’ tattoos, I must say, and I certainly don’t have any myself. And even if I did, I’d be very wary about having a screed in a foreign alphabet. For all I know – and probably him too – this could mean ‘Sweet and sour chicken with fried rice’.

For this week’s entry to Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge, here is an image from Venice, which does feature a road (‘Calle’) leading down to the Grand Canal, although it’s a moot point whether the road is the principal focus for the gentleman on the left.
The high contrast from the strong shadows works well in Black & White, I think, as does the highlighted texture of the walls.
