Cee’s Fun ‘Foto’ Challenge this week has the theme of ‘Smooth’.
The well-known phrase ‘smooth as monumental alabaster’ (from Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’)came to mind when I saw that. I’m not sure whether these mosaic flowers are set in alabaster or ‘just’ marble, but I do know that it’s part of the ornate decoration of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and that it’s very smooth.

Inspired by his own DIY project, Frank has selected the topic of ‘Floor’ for this week’s Tuesday Photo Challenge.
This is a detail of a mosaic floor in the main prayer hall of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

In response to Cee’s Fun ‘Foto’ Challenge with the theme of ‘lights’, here is another night shot taken from the balcony of our apartment in Abu Dhabi, with traffic busy as usual on Hamdan Street.

Last week in response to Cee’s Black & White theme of sculpture I posted an image of some statuary from the Basilica San Marco. This week’s topic is glass and here is another image from a religious edifice, in this case the mind-bogglingly beautiful Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

This was the scene that would confront me when I stood at night on the balcony of our apartment in Abu Dhabi.
It’s a lot quieter here.

The rope twisted into a knot leads the eye in to this detail of a wooden dhow that I spotted in the Bateen area of Abu Dhabi city. The traditional boat is contrasted with the modern office blocks in the background.

This week, Frank asked us to share a photo that encapsulates special memories.
Memories of family are always important, of course but we will also always treasure the ten years we spent living in Abu Dhabi.
This image encapsulates both. Taken in the Corniche Park, here with Madame is our darling daughter and our twin grandsons, on their first visit to Abu Dhabi back in 2008.

So is it arches you want for Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge this week? Or domes?
Here’s an image with plenty of both – from the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. The figures at bottom right give an idea of scale.

It was during my ten years in Abu Dhabi that I bought my first DSLR, reigniting my interest in ‘serious’ photography. I spent part of one evening with my new camera sitting on its tripod on the balcony of our apartment doing an exercise recommended by the teacher of one of the weekend courses I took.
The idea was to use a long exposure (eight seconds in this case), during which a zoom lens should be rotated (as smoothly as possible) to give this abstract effect:

Another dip into the archives for the Weekly Photo Challenge this time, as I’m still away from home and therefore from full access to my image library.
Here, my grandson takes a peek around the patio door of our apartment in Abu Dhabi. He – and his twin brother – are rather bigger now.
