Last year, we (which is to say Madame) sowed a selection of wild flowers in a couple of raised beds in our garden. This year we have a colourful swathe of bright orange poppies, which have obviously self-seeded.
Monochrome, however, helps to bring out the detail of the heart of the flower.

Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge this week has the theme of ‘Any kind of house’.
Well, I suppose everyone needs somewhere to live – although probably not in such a grand edifice as this at Chateau Villandry.

Cee wants to see photos of chutes or ladders for her Black & White Challenge this week.
This image is a view of the rear elevation of our house in France, just after we bought it. No, I’m not sure what we were thinking either.
On the other hand, you can see why the project’s working title was ‘Brokedown Palace’. The rickety ladder on the left was, at that time, the only means of access to what is now our bedroom. To be fair, we have spruced it up a bit in the intervening years.

Cee’s theme for her ‘Black & White Photo Challenge’ this week is a ‘view from the side’. This almost abstract image is, in fact, a view of the edges (‘sides’, if you will) of a number of recently manufactured sheets of paper, made according to traditional methods at the Moulin du Got paper mill.

In the medieval streets of the French town of Perigueux, this old-style drainage system disappears up the hill.

For this week’s theme of ‘Murals’, some very old artwork on the walls of the crypt of the church in the village of Gargilesse, in central France.

This statue of King Louis IX – canonised as Saint Louis – stands in splendid isolation on a corner of the mighty basilica of Sacré-Coeur, which dominates the skyline of the Montmartre area of Paris.

It almost beggars belief that the colossal monuments of the ancient city of Petra, such as this tomb carved out of sandstone, were created thousands of years ago by mere human beings.

Don’t be fooled by the title: it’s not a selfie.
What it is, though, is a mountain goat – I’m afraid I can’t remember the particular species – spotted at Al Ain Zoo in the United Arab Emirates.
