Less than a hundred years ago, the standard footwear of rural France was the wooden clog (part of our house used to be the local clogmaker’s workshop). Today, though, traditional clog-making is only seen at expositions of years gone by – as in this example, seen at the Christmas Fair in nearby Lesterps.

Often to be seen at the vide-greniers and miscellaneous Fêtes around here is an artisan who makes wooden clogs in the traditional manner – hand-turned on a lathe. This is his raw material.

This image from the workshop of the local clogmaker in nearby Montrol-Sénard, a living museum of rural life, certainly displays some very interesting textures.

It resonates particularly for me, because what is now the entrance hall of our home was once the atelier of the local sabotier.

Although we have had it done up a bit:

Until well into the last century, the ‘ default’ footwear in rural France was wooden clogs, made by the local ‘sabotier’ (the French word for clog is ‘sabot’ – from which the word ‘saboteur’ is also derived). Indeed, part of our house was once the local sabotier’s workshop, as shown in the second image at the bottom of this post.
Nowadays, clogs are mainly used for decorative purposes (we have a couple of old pairs ourselves), but they are still used by a local traditional dance troupe, as shown in this image.
(On this occasion I decided to use a sepia tone as it seems more in keeping with the ‘retro’ subject)

This room is now our entrance hall. It’s been done up a bit since this was taken.
