A clear contrast between calm and turbulent waters at the weir on the River Vienne in Chabanais.

The River Vienne is comparatively narrow as it flows between the villages of Sainte Radegonde and St-Germain-de-Confolens and it’s crossed by a very old stone bridge. Look over the side and you’ll see that the roadway is supported on a number of pontoons, such as this one.

The very photogenic nearby village of St-Germain-de-Confolens is dominated by the old chateau that towers over it. If you can manage the hike up to the top, the views are very worthwhile.

Being fortunate enough to live where we do, in the rural Limousin region that is part of ‘la France profonde’, finding a tranquil image to meet Frank’s Tuesday Photo Challenge is not exactly a problem.
However, my go-to place around here for tranquility (apart from home itself) is down by the River Vienne in Confolens on a calm sunny day, where the Pont Vieux casts flawless reflections like these:

Reflections are one of my favourite photographic subjects and I have posted quite a few here. Many of these have been of the River Vienne as it flows through the nearby town of Confolens and here’s another one, previously unseen.

Another image – this time in monochrome as a response to Cee’s latest Black & White Photo Challenge on the subject of ‘trees’ – from a preternaturally still and sunny day in the town of Chabanais.

The nearby town of Confolens abounds with photographic opportunities, especially on calm, cloudless days that produce almost flawless reflections on the River Vienne.
On the right bank of the river there are a number of these archways that provide interesting frames for the vibrant colours.

The ironwork of the main road bridge across the River Vienne in Chabanais is perfectly mirrored in the water on an exceptionally clear, still and sunny day.

After the little detour to Bordeaux over the past few weeks, we’re back at the gift that keeps on giving of old doors in Confolens. The next few posts will all feature doors to be found on the left bank (rive gauche) of the Vienne river, which flows through the town and gave it its old strategic importance.
To get from one side to t’other, you can always drive over the newer bridge, but on a nice day it’s much more pleasant to stroll over the pedestrianised Pont Vieux.
And this is what you’ll find in the way of interesting doors, beginning with a church:
And something that looks like a church but isn’t:
Not all doors are quite so spectacular, of course:
A little more modern is this example, with some interesting ironwork:
Most prosaic of all is this, actually an electricity sub-station:
