This week we’re not just close to home; we’re at home. We bought what you could reasonably describe as a ‘doer-upper’ back in 2005. It was, as the agent’s particulars stated, in trés mauvais état – a very bad state.
This was the back door leading into what is now the kitchen:
Inside there was a tree growing out of the wall where the log-burning stove now sits. The whole interior has been effectively rubbed out and started again. We’ve also made a few changes to the exterior:

What a beautiful transformation! You must get a lot of satisfaction looking back on all you have achieved!
Certainly glad it’s over and turned out so well.
Yes I imagine a “doer upper” can be very stressful. I often look at them myself but don’t have the vision to imagine the possibilities. Though when I see one that has been done I can appreciate the outcome and all the work that has been put into it!
Oooooo!!! What a job well done, especially buying it in the first place and keeping your vision alive and getting the work done. Congratulations!
All artistic vision courtesy of Madame. And we struck very lucky with our builders.
Oh it’s so beautiful!! Bravo! Love the green you selected for the door and window and so happy you restored such a fantastic old building.
Thank you very much. It’s officially olive green. We’re glad we did it, although the locals think we’re mad for not just knocking it down and putting up a bungalow.
They might think you are mad, but I bet they appreciate the result!
Well done! I can only imagine how much time and effort went into the conversion, but I’m certain the results made it worthwhile: beautiful job 🙂
Not to mention the money (which I’ve never added up). But some things are beyond price.
Wow!! It looks wonderful now. You should be proud of what you accomplished and I’m sure you love living there.

We certainly do. Thank you.
Oh, what a wonderful job you did! I love the little brick stoop you added — I had to look at the Before picture to see it wasn’t original. You’ve seen and realized the potential in a way this building (if buildings could dream) has been dreaming of.
Thank you. It’s Madame who has the vision and the aesthetic sensibility. I wrote the cheques.
Oh it’s so beautiful! What a wonderful restoration to be part of! 🙂
Great job! (in both ways: picture and doors:)
Wonderful! A labour of love for sure. It is a beautiful transformation!
What a beautiful transformation! The “before” shot sure makes for a great photo though. 🙂
Wow, what a beautiful redo! I would have been terrified to take on such a project.
So was I. That and/or nuts. Turned out nicely, though.
Great to see the before and after! A little love can do wonders!
What a beautiful house to come home to. I’d be very proud to have achieved what you have done there. Lovely.
What a nice change! Great doors!
