Coffee Time
Posted on September 21, 2022
This highly decorative coffee service can be found at the Chateua de la Mercerie, in the Charente region of central France. It’s probably totally impractical (and certainly not dishwasher safe), but it is at least replete with curves and circles for Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge this week.

Stacked chairs
Posted on September 17, 2022
The centre of social life in our nearest village is the salle polyvalente – in effect, the local village hall. It hosts all kinds of meeting and functions and its furniture – including these remarkably uncomfortable chairs – are stacked neatly in another building, just behind the salle itself.

Magenta

I don’t know what these flowers are called, but I’d certainly say that the petals are tinged with magenta.

The Buddleia in Our Back Garden
Posted on September 15, 2022
A mere twenty steps from our back door is a by-now well-established Buddleia bush, normally irresistible to butterflies and bees – although apparently not at the precise moment I took this photo a couple of days ago.

Soaring

For Cee’s Black & White Challenge this week, with the theme of ‘texture’, another dramatic image from the subterranean church at Aubeterre-sur-Dronne.

A Big Old Moth
Posted on September 8, 2022
(with apologies to Cee for the creepy-crawly)
One morning last week, I opened our barn door and this blew out in a gust of wind. At first I thought it was a dried leaf, but when I stirred it with my foot, its wings opened. The wingspan is about three inches so it’s certainly bigger than your average moth.

Lambing Time
Posted on September 8, 2022
Out here in rural France, we’re surrounded by nature of course. That doesn’t mean it’s all idyllic, but it’s hard to take a walk during lambing time in spring and not feel, at least for a minute or two, that all’s well with the world.

The Wine List
Posted on September 3, 2022
Meanwhile, back in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, home to the subterranean church as featured n recent posts, on the main street there is a now closed down shop that obviously used to sell some very upmarket wines.
For example, a bottle of that 1967 Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion would nowadays set you back close to 400 dollars or euros. Cooking wine it ain’t.

Cut from the living rock
Posted on September 2, 2022
Cee’s theme for her Fun Foto Challenge this week is ‘man-made items’. Handily, this gives me an opportunity to post another image from the subterranean church at Aubeterre-sur-Dronne.
This edifice is a good fifteen feet high and it’s been created by cutting away the solid rock from all around it. If that’s not impressive then I don’t know what is.

Ice Ice Baby
Posted on August 28, 2022
These ice cubes were last seen heading in the general direction of a gin & tonic but have now completely disappeared, despite an intensive search effort.
A spokesman said “the trail’s gone cold; it’s like they just melted away”
