Tuesday Photo Challenge: Worship
Posted on April 17, 2019
Frank has set the theme of ‘Worship’ for the Tuesday Photo Challenge this week.
Always pleased to have an opportunity to showcase one of the most visually stunning places of worship you’re ever likely to see – he Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi

Thursday Doors: Tranquility Base again
Posted on March 21, 2019
We have just rented this little house, no more than 50 yards from our own front door here in Tranquility Base, for my mother. It’s very bijou.

This gave us access to some previously unseen doors of a barn which belongs to another of our neighbours:

Scenes from the crypt

For this week’s theme of ‘Murals’, some very old artwork on the walls of the crypt of the church in the village of Gargilesse, in central France.

Thursday Doors: Beverley Revisited
Posted on March 7, 2019
Apologies for the recent hiatus in door posts, but the fact of the matter is that I had just run out of doors worthy of your consideration and so far this year have had neither the opportunity nor the suitable weather to find any new ones.
However, we recently visited our daughter and family who live near the town of Beverley in East Yorkshire and I managed to capture with my iPhone these few examples of the typical Georgian style. They’re rather better looked after than those I tend to put up here, but interesting nonetheless.
I’ll be back when I’ve got some more to share.

Note the decorative pair of wellington boots next to this door:

Round Patterns
Posted on March 5, 2019
This image is multi-tasking as my entry this week for both Frank’s Tuesday Photo Challenge with the theme of ‘Round’ and Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge, where the subject is “Patterns‘.
It is a photograph of one of the magnificent crystal chandeliers in the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, captured by setting my camera’s auto-timer and laying it on the floor of the prayer hall, pointing up at the ceiling.

Touching

Smooth as marble
Posted on February 26, 2019
Cee’s Fun ‘Foto’ Challenge this week has the theme of ‘Smooth’.
The well-known phrase ‘smooth as monumental alabaster’ (from Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’)came to mind when I saw that. I’m not sure whether these mosaic flowers are set in alabaster or ‘just’ marble, but I do know that it’s part of the ornate decoration of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and that it’s very smooth.

Splendid Isolation

This statue of King Louis IX – canonised as Saint Louis – stands in splendid isolation on a corner of the mighty basilica of Sacré-Coeur, which dominates the skyline of the Montmartre area of Paris.

This is a detail from an embroidered bag that I saw on display at the ‘Pour L’amour du Fil’ expo in Nantes a couple oof years ago.
