The city of Toulouse, in southern France, has a number of parks, of which the Japanese Garden is one of the most famous. It’s not Monet’s Giverny, but it’s pretty good, even if the red bridge may be a little derivative.

Many years ago, I did a weekend beginners’ photography course in Abu Dhabi. We were let loose for an hour or so to snap away at whatever took our fancy, and I came across this graffito on the floor of the compound. So I took out my wallet and posed it underneath.
I still have that wallet; and it’s still empty.

You could argue all night about what is the photographer’s greatest friend, but I’d have to say that a red foreground object must be among the frontrunners.
Imagine how dull this picture would be without that red railing.
