Cee’s Black & White Challenge for this week is to show places to walk or hike. Out here in the French countryside the ‘proper’ roads are few and far between, but there are many mysterious-looking tracks, used only for farmers’ access, that are well worth exploring on a country walk.
In this case, I particularly liked the strong shadows of the trees across the path, which look almost like railway sleepers as they recede into the distance .

If you grow up in the countryside, chances are that you’ll be playing with country toys….
….and when you don’t play with them any more, you collect them..

Even with all the latest technology and machinery available to them, farmers’ work is hard. It’s difficult to imagine how tough it must have been when everything had to be done by hand with simple toools like these.

Out here, wood-fired heating is still the norm, so there’s a lot of bois de chauffage to be seen in the nearby fields. This particular stack of logs, just down the road from us, would be enough to keep a home fire burning for years.

They do things differently here in La France profonde.
If you were trying to sell your house, the chances are that you’d have it spotless, impeccably tidy and quite possibly pervaded with the smell of freshly-baked bread and perked coffee.
Here it’s quite common for everything to be just left behind, like a particularly scruffy Mary Celeste.
We didn’t buy this one…

This week in the Smartphone Challenge we’re asked for a shot that’s framed naturally.
Can do. At the side of our garage a line of trees separates our property from a neighbour’s field, in which he grazes some of his horses.

This week, the challenge is to post a picture that conveys ‘your culture’.
Which begs the question, what is my culture? As an English (although I prefer to be Scouse, which is most definitely not the same thing) expatriate living very happily in rural France, the answer is by no means clear-cut.
However, I think this image of a brightly painted old-fashioned cart on display outside the Mairie gives a decent idea of my current cultural circumstances.
