Lens-Artists Challenge: Shadowed

There is a path that runs right along the Corniche in Abu Dhabi. It’s not just a path, though (c’mon, this is Abu Dhabi we’re talking about), as interest is added thanks to fountains, underpasses and other features.

Also it being Abu Dhabi, it’s hardly ever cloudy and the sunlight is very strong; consequently, the shadows are well defined. In this section, the high wall is completely in the shade and a strong, dark shadow is cast by a lower wall and something else (I’ve forgotten what it was exactly) to the right. I’ve converted the original image to monochrome to produce this abstract, but definitely shadowed, image.

Leading lines, anyone?

A little 30-minute constitutional last Friday morning led us down a narrow and rarely used country road with pastureland on each side.. The low autumn sun cast long shadows and the tractor tyre tracks at the entrance to this field produced enough leading lines to make anybody happy.

Monochrome Madness: The Demon Drink

Spooky shadows cast on the wall by this cut glass decanter.

From the shadows

Great to see that Cee is feeling well enough to resurrect some of her challenges – they’ve been greatly missed. More importantly, so has Cee herself: welcome back.

This is a flower we’ve had growing in one of our raised beds for a long time. I was particularly attracted by the long shadows, which give some extra depth to the image.

Lens-Artist Challenge: Asymmetry

Last week’s challenge was all about symmetry, so it’s quite logical that this time we should consider asymmetry.

I featured an image from Albi cathedral last week and I’m staying there this time. I was struck by what I saw in one of the many side chapels that line the nave. The only natural illumination comes from that stained glass window, but there are two electric lights shining on to that suspended dove. They cast a very striking – and asymmetric – shadow.

Shadows and reflections

Cee’s theme for her Black & White Challenge this week is shadows and reflections. You’re more likely to get just one or the other in a single image, but this picture of a well-preserved stone sarcophagus in the cloister of the local museum at Perigueux manages to combine the two thanks to the strong shadow cast by the bright sunlight and the reflection of yours truly (sadly, rather less well=preserved).

Bridge of shadows

Bright sunshine in Cahors casts the shadow of the Pont Valentre onto the weir beneath it.

Glass of wine, anyone?

Shine a light through a glass of red wine and some of the effects can be quite pleasing.

(Same goes for drinkng it.)

Fence

Bright sunlight casting strong shadows made this fence by the riverside in Chabanais a good subject for Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge this week
