Through the archway

I spotted this little statue of a sanglier (wild boar) through an aRchway in the old town of Perigueux.

The curve of the boar\s back echoes that of the archway and contrasts with the more formal geometric shapes of the stonework and the steps.

Hats Under Wraps

Madame rocks a nice hat, but there are very few opportunities to wear one in the French countryside. Rather than hide them away, however, a series of them stand – under wraps – on the top of her wardrobe.

52 Week Smartphone Challenge: 23 Leading Lines

Week 23 of the Smartphone Challeneg is, frankly, a bit of an odd one. We are invited to use strong leading lines in food photography.

Okay….

Now, as I do not use Instagram (where I believe it’s compulsory), I’m not in the habit of posting photographs of every scrap of food I consume, I just had to come up with something.

So here’s a picture of a swede (‘rutabaga‘ en français) on our kitchen table.

Welcome shade

Most benches in Abu Dhabi tend to come with an accompanying shelter to provide some shade – essential when the sun beats down all day and air temperatures routinely exceed 40 degrees.

These benches are on Yas Island and, it must be said, are rather less interesting than the sinuous curves of the structure that shades them (not entirely successfully).

The artist who produced this graffito, on the outskirts of Nantes, is obviously committed to the cause, given that whoever it was had to scale a wall to get up onto the roof of a shop.

Monday Window: Noirlac

The restored Abbaye de Noirlac includes a number of bedrooms furnished in the appropriate style. With the bed being off to the left, behind the curtain, you could probably describe this particular example in hotel terms as a ‘junior suite’.

52 Week Smartphone Challenge: 22 Stranger

I thought that this rather mysterious painted shopfront in the nearby town of Bellac was suitable for the theme of ‘Stranger’ in Week 22 of the 52 Week Smartphone Challenge.

In English, the words over the door read: ‘At the beginning of the 90s…somewhere in the desert of Tamalkan…I lost myself’

I can find no trace of anywhere on Earth called Tamalkan. The mystery deepens…

All made by man

The fence was made by men. The rusting cars were made by men.

And so was the destruction: Oradour-sur-Glane.
