This week we’re looking for cinematic images.
I took this photo in the desert outside the city of Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates. For me, the main attractions were the strong leading line and the combination of sand, scrub and stone. Oh, and the symmetry of the two slopes.
It’s not too much of a stretch to see this as an establishing shot in a Western, with the added mystery of what could be lying in wait on the other side of that crest……

I think I can help you there. We lived in Abu Dhabi for ten years and were surrounded by the stuff.
This image, however, comes from the desert just outside the oasis town of Al Ain. It’s not that far from civilisation (witness the electricity pylons on the horizon), but the dunes seem to roll away endlessly in every direction. Note also the animal tracks.

Palm trees cast long shadows across a path in Hili Oasis, near Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, producing the illusion of depth in an abstract image that makes me think of something a space probe might send back from the surface of a distant planet. (Although that’s probably just me.)
