Weekly Photo Challenge: Future

When I saw that this week’s topic was ‘Future’, I knew exactly which image I wanted to use. Unfortunately, I didn’t take it (my son did) and nor do I have a copy in my library. However, the immensely talented Madame made a wall-hanging based on it, which now sits over our stairs. Here is my photograph of that:
It shows our twin grandsons taking their first unaccompanied walk together down the beach to the Arabian Gulf in Abu Dhabi. It always looked to me that they were heading off into the future.
I think I know why, too. When I was about their age now (eight), I remember a big – or so it seemed to me at the time – picture painted on the wall of the old Birkenhead Market. It showed a boy and a girl heading off down a path together towards a brightly shining sun: As I recall, it was actually an advert for childrens’ shoes and was captioned ‘The Highway To Health’. Anyway, the photo on the beach brought it back to me.
Thursday Doors: Dubai

Think of Dubai and you probably have images of mile upon mile of glass-plated towers. That’s mostly accurate, it has to be said; however, there is still a small part of the old city that gives an idea of what it must have been like before the oil began to flow. It’s the al-Bastakiya area, just by the Creek, where it’s possible to see restored traditional buildings – and their doors:

Not only do I have a photographic record of this piece of history, but Madame – whose talents are boundless – has also made a wall-hanging, which currently adorns our TV room:

Photography 101: Treasure

Today’s image is a close-up detail of one of the exhibits at the International Quilt Show in Dubai in 2012, showing a camel train laden with treasure.
Quilters’ work, often incredibly detailed and painstaking, is itself something to be treasured.

As I may have mentioned, Madame is a quilter and quilting is undoubtedly an art form.
This is a waistcoat that she made for me a couple of years ago that was exhibited at the International Quilt Show in Dubai. To my mind it is undoubtedly a work of art (and yes, I do wear it. In public, too).
A Close Look At Quilts

Madame and I recently had the opportunity to attend the International Quilt Show in Dubai, organised by Classic Quilts Dubai.
You don’t have to be a quilter in order to appreciate the talent and effort that goes into producing these works of art. And for a photographer, there’s a whole world of colour and pattern to admire, enjoy and seek to capture.
There is also texture and that’s what I’ve focused (sic) on here. These photographs show some of the detailed work in a selection of the quilts that were on display. They stand alone as images, but they also give a further impression of the extent of the work involved in the quilting process.
