After last week’s call for vibrant colours, Cee is looking for pastels this time.
This is a very large – and circular – electronic display screen which can be found in Dubai Mall. The colours can and do vary considerably, but I managed to capture this image when it was in a more restful mood.

Answering this week’s theme of ‘Lights’ for Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge is this massive chandelier (note the scale of the human figures in the background) in Dubai Mall. I’m not sure it’s one of the fanciest I’ve ever seen, but it’s certainly one of the biggest.

This week’s theme set by The Girl That Dreams Awake is ‘From Above’. This can often provide an interesting and unusual perspective when compared with the more conventional ‘straight ahead’ view.
This particular example is looking down from a fifth-floor balcony onto a water feature in the foyer of a nautically-themed hotel in Dubai.

A view of the helicopter pad near the top of the iconic Burj al Arab hotel (seven stars, no less) in Dubai.

To put it into context, here’s a wider shot of the building:

By far the best way to cross from one side of Dubai Creek to the other is on one of the little passenger boats called abras (think motorised gondolas). This one was tied up on the Deira side.

According to the Tate Gallery, “abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead uses shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect”.
I think this qualifies. It was taken in front of the huge aquarium inside Dubai Mall, and illustrates what happens when you have to use a long exposure in a dimly-lit space and somebody barges into you just as you press the shutter.

The smaller image below shows what it would have looked like without the introduction of the third-party camera shake. Frankly, I prefer the abstract version (it’ll probably come as no surprise to learn that I like tie-dye too).

Think of Dubai and you probably have images of mile upon mile of glass-plated towers. That’s mostly accurate, it has to be said; however, there is still a small part of the old city that gives an idea of what it must have been like before the oil began to flow. It’s the al-Bastakiya area, just by the Creek, where it’s possible to see restored traditional buildings – and their doors:

Not only do I have a photographic record of this piece of history, but Madame – whose talents are boundless – has also made a wall-hanging, which currently adorns our TV room:
