Viewed from the ground floor, this staircase – in an old hotel in Paris – becomes an abstract composition of circles and curves.

This ancient and very worn staircase can be found on the Pont Valentre in the town of Cahors, in southern France.
Amazingly, worn as it is and with no handrail, it is not roped off in any way to prevent public access. It would take a brave or foolhardy soul to climb it, though, however impressive the views over the River Lot might be from the top.

While visiting the restored medieval abbey of Noirlac last year, I was struck by this almost abstract composition of a curving staircase and austere stone walls. Another homage to M C Escher and suitable for Cee’s Black & White subject of ‘Walls’ this week.

Answering the theme of ‘steps’ this week is this dramatic-looking staircase to be found in the twelfth-century church in the nearby village of Saint-Martial-sur-Isop.
Although the ceiling has obviously been renovated, this steep and winding set of stairs leading up to the roof looks, if not original then pretty old. Not surprisingly, it isn’t open to the public.

I think there could be some Health & Safety issues about this ancient staircase in the nearby village of Saint-Martial-sur-Isop. All very well to admire the textures, but you wouldn’t get me up there.

This little-used, but intriguing, stone staircase is tucked away in the narrow streeets of the medieval quarter of the town of Confolens. The composition is almost abstract and puts me in mind a little of Escher.

For this week’s challenge, here’s another image from the Burjuman Centre in Dubai, showing a section of the walkway on the top floor. The starburst effect on the lights is a real bonus here.

The BurJuman Centre is one of the oldest shopping malls in Dubai, and features a couple of grand sweeping staircases, with elements of Art Deco. This is a view taken from the ground floor, looking up to the balcony and ceiling above. The image is almost abstract and works quite well in black & white, I think.

Q: What lies in the blackness to which the eye is irresistibly drawn?
A: The basement. This was taken (with a Blackberry) leaning over the emergency stairwell on the 23rd floor of my old office building in Abu Dhabi.
The idea of depth – and therefore mystery – depends crucially on the sunlight shining in through the glass exterior from the right, producing the shadows on the stairs on that side and the highlights on the metalwork on the left.
