It was the famous French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson who coined the expression ‘the decisive moment’, in his seminal book, ‘Images à la Sauvette’, published in 1952. In photographic terms, the decisive moment is that split second when you press the shutter at exactly the right time to elevate an image out of the ordinary. Of course there is a huge degree of skill involved in that, but also an element of luck.
This week’s challenge is to show photographs that were taken in that brief but decisive moment and, unusually for me, I’m posting two images this time.
My first thought on reading the challenge was ‘fireworks’. It’s surely at least 99% luck if you get a truly memorable image from a firework display, and the chances are that you will instead end up with – almost literally – a damp squib. Somehow, though, I managed to nail this one (and quite a few more, as it happened) on New Year’s Eve in Sydney, close to twenty years ago:

Much more recently – only last weekend, in fact – we went to admire some Highland cattle at a nearby village fête. There were two adjacent pens, one containing two bulls and the other holding some cows with their calves. Having snapped (well, ‘pressed’ really nowadays, isn’t it?) away merrily for a while, I was getting ready to leave when the older bull and one of the cows went in for what can only be described as a smooch through the bars that separated them. I guess I was lucky to be there when it happened.

This week, John has set us the interesting challenge of showing our ‘go-to’ places. To be honest, I’m pretty happy to be here at home most of the time (not least because it doesn’t involve the hassle of actually getting to anywhere).
We have been very lucky to have traveled to some wonderful places, so I thought I’s just post images from three of my favourite destinations. I don’t think the first two need any further introduction…

This third one may not be quite so familiar. It’s the Corniche in Abu Dhabi as our evening cruise passed the headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, where I worked for the last ten years of my career. We have many happy memories of our time in the UAE.

Way back when, we found ourselves in Sydney on New Year’s Eve and so were able to experience the world-famous fireworks display for ourselves.

This close-up of a small part of the infrastructure of the Sydney Harbour Bridge gives some idea of the intricate complexity of the steelwork.

Is there anyone who didn’t recognise the Sydney Opera House?

I thought I might start playing along with the new Photographing Public Art Challenge (PPAC) that is being curated in alternate weeks by Cee Neuner and Marsha Ingrao. As usual, I’ve turned up late, so this is Week 2.
The idea is to post an image of any example of public art, which is defined as any art form (buildings, statues, graffiti, paintings etc) that is plainly visible from a public place. There’s certainly never going to be a shortage of potential subjects.
My initial contribution is ‘The Convict’. This carving in sandstone can be found in the oldest part of Sydney, around Circular Quay. It’s one of a series portraying historical characters. The ‘real’ shackles certainly bring it to life. I suppose you could say that they are quite arresting.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is iconic. It’s possible to take a guided tour of the superstructure, as these hardy souls have. No thank you: sea level is just fine with me.
