Looking down on the tourists

Frank’s theme for this week is ‘sculpture’. I certainly have no shortage of images to choose from to fit in with that, but I decided to go with this close-up from Barzaghi’s  1882 ‘Monument to Nicoló Tommaseo’, who looks down on the passing hordes with faint amusement from his plinth in Campo Santo Stefano in Venice. The detail is extraordinary.

Living Colour

The island of Burano, in the Venetian Lagoon, is noted for the bright colours that the residents paint their houses.

Tuesday Photo Challenge: Slippery

A particularly interesting theme from Frank for this week’s Tuesday Photo Challenge: ‘slippery’.

This scallop was on a display in the fishmarket near the Rialto Bridge in Venice. The contrast between the slippery flesh and the characteristically patterned scallop shells adds interest.

Basilica San Marco, Venice

These carvings atop the Basilica San Marco in Venice are clearly not the originals, but there is plenty of intricate detail to appreciate, especially in monochrome:

Tuesday Photo Challenge: Delicious

The freshly-caught sea bass on display at the Rialto fish market in Venice looked absolutely delicious.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Pedestrian

Pedestrians, but hardly a pedestrian setting.

In Venice, and also on the islands in the Venetian Lagoon, if you’re not in a boat then you have to be a pedestrian. These particular examples of the species are walking alongside one of the small canals on the island of Burano.

Tuesday Photo Challenge: Alley

Frank’s theme of ‘Alley’ for this week was, you might say, right up my street. I particularly enjoy photographing old -= sometimes very old – urban architecture, so I have plenty of alleyways in my collection.

Very often, of course, it’s impossible to see right to the end of a medieval alley or passageway, which adds a sense of mystery to the image. On the other hand, though, they are also typically quite dark and gloomy.

However, I think I’ve found a compromise here. The island of Burano in the Venetian Lagoon is especially noted for the bright colours with which most of the houses are painted – even those down a mysterious dark alley like this one:

Tuesday Photo Challenge: Healthy

This week, Frank has chosen the theme of ‘Healthy’ for his Tuesday Photo Challenge. A bit tricky, but this greengrocer’s stall in the Rialto Market in Venice has an abundance of stuff that’s supposed to be good for you:

Mundane? Shop Window

A butcher’s window display that I spotted in one of the narrow streets of the San Polo neighbourhood of Venice. The big hand-written sign ‘Oggi c’e il capretto’ means ‘Today we have kid [as in kid goat]’ and there it is, hanging right in the middle.
