Weekly Photo Challenge: Reflecting on 2017

The final WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge of the year is to post the ‘most meaningful’ photograph that we’ve taken in 2017.
I was surprised to discover that my Lightroom catalogue has expanded by well over 2,000 during the course of this year, so there’s plenty to choose from. I wouldn’t describe any of them as being particularly ‘meaningful’; I just enjoy ‘spotting’ images and capturing them in photographs.
Probably my favourite subject, though, is reflections, so here are two images (I coudn’t choose between them) that haven’t been posted before.
The first was taken from a boat on the River Lot in the town of Cahors and is of a buoy, which has the inestimable advantage of constituting a red foreground object. I also like the contrast between the sharpness of the buoy and the blur of the reflected trees and buildings. With a bit of post-processing, it’s also possible to see why it’s there.
The second is of the River Vienne in the town of Chabanais on a peerlessly calm and sunny day: in October, no less.

It was during my ten years in Abu Dhabi that I bought my first DSLR, reigniting my interest in ‘serious’ photography. I spent part of one evening with my new camera sitting on its tripod on the balcony of our apartment doing an exercise recommended by the teacher of one of the weekend courses I took.
The idea was to use a long exposure (eight seconds in this case), during which a zoom lens should be rotated (as smoothly as possible) to give this abstract effect:

Take a long enough time-scale and you could argue that everything is temporary. There’s all the difference in the world, in terms of longevity, between the Great Pyramid and a Higgs boson, however.
At the shorter end of the time frame there are, most obviously, fireworks and flowers.
So here are two images that illustrate the temporary life-cycle of a flower, from our garden earlier this year:

Although I’ve had to raid my existing WordPress media library for this week’s challenge (as I currently do not have access to all my images), I think that this sunset over Beverley, in East Yorkshire, not only meets the theme of ‘Glow’ but is worth seeing again.
