Lens-Artists Challenge: Stormy

The gathering storm: I took this photo in Australia, in the wine-growing area of New South Wales.

What began as a bright and sunny day quickly darkened as a storm front moved in. Shortly after this was taken, the sky was almost black and it rained. A lot…

Lens-Artists Challenge: Complementary Colours

I’d like to think that I have a reasonable grasp of the theory behind complementary colours. The problem is that the world doesn’t necessarily adhere to the principle and often seems quite happy to juxtapose any old clashing shades with nary a thought about the aesthetics of the matter.

Orange and blue are certainly complementary, and when the setting sun hits the underside of clouds, the vibrant orange glow it can produce sits very well against the still-blue sky. Crop out any earthbound distractions and you could get yourself a bit of abstract art.

Well, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it…

Last On The Card: Moonshot

I captured this view of a bright moon, partly obscured by light clouds, on my way to put out the bins. How prosaic.

(My hands must be steadier than I thought: exposure time was 0.5 seconds)

Busy Skies

Plenty of air traffic overflying here, close to the very centre of France.

Approaching menace

There have been quite a few thunderstorms here over the past few days, with plenty of dramatic cloud formations. This was one was made all the more striking by the contrast with the golden hour sunlight.

The Liver Bird Reigns Supreme

This cloud formation over our house was too interesting to ignore…

…especially as it reminded me of the iconic Liver Bird, the symbol of Liverpool, the finest city on earth:

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Clouds

Adaptation

This rather stark, quasi-abstract image obviously requires some explanation. It’s a skyscape of course, but the cables are what carry the electricity from the nearest substation – about three miles away – to the outlying hamlets, including Tranquility Base.

These cables are strung from a long line of concrete posts that run all the way along the side of the road. Except in this case the post has been replaced by what can only be described as a forked tree branch, incongruous among the concrete. I suppose they know what they’re doing.

The chemtrail of the plane passing overhead is important in adding depth and context to the image.

Even The Clouds Are Straight

A particularly dramatic sky early one recent morning. You expect the chemtrails from overflying aeroplanes to be straight, of course, but on this occasion the clouds seemed to be as well.

Under April Skies

I took this photo from outside my front door at dusk one evening back in April this year. The exceptional mackerel sky was too dramatic to ignore.

52 Week Smartphone Challenge: 43 Film Noir

For this week’s Smartphone Challenge, the prompt is ‘Film Noir’ – ‘dark and moody’. This is another moonshot from just outside our house. I think it qualifies.
