Thursday Doors: Chateau de la Riviere
Posted on June 21, 2019
Just outside Pompadour lies the Chateau de la Rivière, home of JN Stables. Apart from the stables themselves – and here’s a reminder…

…there are some old buildings from the original Chatea, including some characterful doors:

….not all of which are readily accessible

There is also a – deconsecrated – chapel, which boasts an ossuary:

The two arches

Cee’s fun Foto Challenge theme has moved onto ‘two’ this week.
This pair of arches are part of the church in the nearby village of Lesterps. Nothing to do with McDonalds

This trail, running through the woods at Beecraigs Country Park in central Scotland, looks especially striking with its carpet of autumn leaves:

Behind the bust

At the Chateau Azay-le-Ferron, in the Indre département of central France, this bust of a former owner sits on a mantelpiece in front of a mirror that gives away some of the secrets of its construction.

Thursday Doors: Pompadour – The Stables
Posted on June 13, 2019
As promised, this week we have a selection of stable doors from in and around the town of Pompadour.
To begin, a couple of external shots from the National Stud:

And once you go inside….

Not surprisingly, the presence of the National Stud in Pompadour has led to a number of other stables and breeding companies being established in the vicinity. These two images were captured at one of the leading private stables close by. They also prove that, on this occasion at least, it wasn’t too late to close the stable door.

Who you gonna call….?
Posted on June 12, 2019
No, this isn’t my new smartphone…
Last weekend we visited the Chateau at Azay-le-Ferron. This telephone, now located in the kitchen, was apparently the first (so number one) telephone to be installed in the entire Indre département. Which of course begs the question of who could they call?

Tuesday Photo Challenge: Road

Out here in the French countryside there are many roads like this: leading who knows where and accessible only by tractor.

Poppy

Last year, we (which is to say Madame) sowed a selection of wild flowers in a couple of raised beds in our garden. This year we have a colourful swathe of bright orange poppies, which have obviously self-seeded.
Monochrome, however, helps to bring out the detail of the heart of the flower.

Thursday Doors: Pompadour (2)
Posted on June 6, 2019
This week, another selection of doors from the town of Pompadour, in central France.
To begin with, three doors for the price of one in this photo, taken from the inside of the Chapel St-Blaise

This is a great door – such a shame that somebody saw fit to park their car right outside it. Honestly, some people…

Two contrasting doors next to each other:

Rather grander, this one:

Next week, given that Pompadour – as the home of the French National Stud – is a very horsey kind of place, a selection of stable doors (both before and after the horse has bolted).
