Answering Frank’s call for posts on the theme of ‘Rain’ for this week was a bit of a challenge. I’m something of a fair-weather photographer, so if it does happen to be raining then the chances are that I’ll be inside and not out getting wet and taking pictures.
Here’s an acceptable compromise, though. I captured this image in the Hunter Valley wine-growing region of Australia a few years ago. It wasn’t actually raining at the time, but it was just about to.
And how.

The Pont Valentré, which bridges the river Lot in Cahors, dates from the fourteenth century, so certainly qualifies for Cee’s category this week of anything over 50 years old.
Then again, so do I….
The bridge’s four towers makes it visually appealing not only from a distance but also – unlike some – when you’re actually standing on it.

Going back a few years, while we were still living in Abu Dhabi and our house here was being renovated, we would spend some of our summer holidays locally. We stayed in a Chambre d’Hôtes opposite the massive Collégiale church in Le Dorat.
Looking out of our window one afternoon, I saw this reflection in the roof of a car parked just below.

A noble name for a noble, but ultimately doomed (curry houses tend not to work out too well in France) enterprise in the back streets of Cahors.

This sheep was patiently waiting its turn to be sheared when I spotted it at last year’s ‘Wool Fair’ in nearby Saint-Martial-sur-Isop.

Cee’s theme for her Black & White Photo Challenge this week of ‘bikes’ gives me an opportunity to post another image of our friend Terry’s much cherished Triumph motorcycle:

Cee’s Black & White challenge this week looks for a large object. To me, ‘large’ is a relative term: any elephant would look large stood next to a mouse, even if it’s pretty average-sized as far as elephants go.
However, there’s no doubt that this is one large spider. On display in Nantes (as, indeed, is an extra-large mechanical elephant), it’s lucky that it’s a man-made object rather than the real thing, because I for one would be running a mile.

Cee’s challenge this week is to post an image of something – anything – that contains a double letter.
I spotted these old wine bottles standing on the floor next to a bed in the sleeping quarters at the restored Abbaye de la Reau.
Somehow, the post-processing produced an effect like a still life painting, which I find attractive.

This ancient and very worn staircase can be found on the Pont Valentre in the town of Cahors, in southern France.
Amazingly, worn as it is and with no handrail, it is not roped off in any way to prevent public access. It would take a brave or foolhardy soul to climb it, though, however impressive the views over the River Lot might be from the top.

Like much of France, it’s been cold and we’ve had some snow recently. As a result, these old cartwheels (and birdbath) that sit at the back of our house were looking pretty chilled last week – and not in a good way.
