Thursday Doors: Chabanais – the old railway station

I recently revisited the town of Chabanais in the Charente departement. There have been a few posts of doors from there in past years, but – to my pleasant surprise – this time I found, by striking out in a different direction, previously unexplored areas with plenty to offer fro this weekly challenge.
I didn’t even know that Chabanais had a gâre – railway station. Well it does, although it doesn’t actually have any trains: the replacement buses leave from just outside.
With the station building itself now permanently closed, the exterior is starting to show the signs of neglect…
…even those on the more sheltered side:

On a heavily overcast day there’s more than a touch of gloomy sadness about the now unused railway lines that run through the town of Chabanais.

Frank’s theme for this week’s Tuesday Photo Challenge is in one sense a little out of the ordinary, but in another way could hardly be more mundane – ‘groceries’. So here are some groceries that are a little out of the ordinary: a basket of coloquintes (gourds) that I spotted at an open-air market in the town of Chabanais. They’re nothing if not colourful.

Right up until the most recent post in the Fun Foto Challenge, this week’s theme has been ‘candid’, but now it’s ‘catching people unawares’. It’s too late for me to change now, so you’re getting the post I’d already prepared.
At a recent Sunday market in the town of Chabanais there was, for no obvious reason, a small pen containing a few miserable-looking donkeys. The baleful stare that this one gave me suggests that he wasn’t happy to be photographed – or to be there in the first place.

Taking a break from the treasures of Perigueux, I recently revisited the nearby (40 minute drive) town of Chabanais, which was featured here about a year ago. I managed to discover a few more interesting doors.
After last week’s diet of exclusively brown doors, here, by way of a change, are a couple of green ones:

For this week’s Tuesday Challenge, Frank at Dutch Goes The Photo! has set the theme of ‘quotidian’, in the sense of the normal everyday that could, in photographic terms, repay a closer view or a different perspective.
What could be more humdrum than a drain, you may wonder? But this drain-cover in the gutter of a street in Chabanais is surely worth a second glance, not only for the interesting structure of the ironwork, but also for the contrast provided by the autumn leaves that have become trapped in it.
