I thought that this rather mysterious painted shopfront in the nearby town of Bellac was suitable for the theme of ‘Stranger’ in Week 22 of the 52 Week Smartphone Challenge.
In English, the words over the door read: ‘At the beginning of the 90s…somewhere in the desert of Tamalkan…I lost myself’
I can find no trace of anywhere on Earth called Tamalkan. The mystery deepens…

“What does serenity mean to you?’ is the question posed for the 21st instalment of the 52 Week Smartphone Challenge.
I always find this view very tranquil and calming (not that I often need to calm down). It’s what I see when I look over the wall of our back garden. The two fields were bought with the house, so for a few brief minutes I am master of all I survey.

I sort of knew what ‘negative space’ was before it came up as the theme for Week 20 of the 52 Week Smartphone Challenge. However, I had to look it up to be sure.
And I’m not entirely convinced that this image – taking advantage of that special light you get when the low sun breaks through the clouds after heavy rain – is fully on point, but it is quite dramatic.

“It’s the same story the crow told me, it’s the only one he knows
Like the morning sun you come, and like the wind you go”
– Grateful Dead: ‘Uncle John’s Band’

About three years ago, we scattered some seeds of an orange poppy and they keep coming back every year, providing splashes of vibrant colour all over the garden. Like life itself, they come, they age and then they go.

“Heavy as a stone. Light as a feather” says the prompt for week 18. Well, how about as light as a dandelion?

Week 17’s prompt reads as follows: “Balanced composition is pretty straightforward unless you are trying to shoot in the “Accidental Renaissance” style. So shoot a balanced image in the Accidental Renaissance style.”
I must be honest: I had to go away and look up ‘Accidental Renaissance’ when I read that. For the equally uninitiated, this gives a fair idea: ‘Renaissance artwork is instantly recognizable for characteristics like dramatic composition and a striking contrast between light and dark. Sometimes, these elements unexpectedly pop up in modern-day images.’
I’m not sure that this image really fulfils the brief, but the vignette is quite striking, and it’s nothing if not balanced. Of course it’s a selfie, but does that ornate masonry reinforcing rod makes me look like a little devil or an old goat?
I leave it to others to decide.*
* Oh. Apparently, ‘both’ is another option.

This week’s challenge calls for an image with the subject in the centre of the frame that somehow portrays loneliness.
Tricky. Clearly, isolating the subject is a sine qua non in order to achieve the required mood, but for the additional poignancy of loneliness here is a broken egg, which must have been stolen from a nest, most likely by a predatory bird which then dropped it.

One quarter of the way through the 52 Week Smartphone Challenge and the theme is ‘Beginnings’. Which may seem a bit late, but in terms of nature the timing is spot on.
New life is beginning everywhere – including on our laurel bushes. We’re never short of a bayleaf when the recipe demands one.
